David's Story

David was born on Dec.4,1951 in Severn, MD. His first efforts in music were at Millersville Elementary School ( Millersville Md ) with clarinet lessons in the late 50's. Couldn't read a note but fooled 'em all playing by ear. He later traded his brother his clarinet for a Gibson guitar. He sang a little in church, but quit and started playing the guitar at about age 12.

After graduating from high school in 1969, he went into the Coast Guard until 1973. He went to Cape May NJ Boot Camp in 1969, Damage Control School in Gov. Island NY in 1970, then to Yorktown VA. He stayed one year in the carpenter's shop, then went to Fire Fighting School as an instructor the the rest of his term, except for a few months on the USCG Unimak for Underway Training just before receiving his Honorable Discharge in mid 1973 as a Damage Controlman 2nd Class.

While still in the Coast Guard, David married for the first time in Jan. 1972, and had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth, in Nov. of that year.

After coming out of the Coast Guard, he went into Manager Training for Gino's Marchetti . He managed in the Glen Burnie, Annapolis for one year. While still at Gino's he bought his first pedal steel guitar and in late 1974 purchased Petro's Music Store on Eastern Ave. in Baltimore, MD., then same store where he had bought the steel.

The first band David played with was L.C.Smith and the Allstars in 1975. He played with many, bands through out the Balto. D.C. area, before and after going with Brenda Kay & Mod Country, later known as Brenda Kay & Branded Kountry. In the meantime, he took steel guitar lessons from Buddy Charlton of Ernest Tubb & the Texas Troubadours. David has had the honor of backing several well-know country stars. They include:

In the mid-70's, he opened Little David's Music in Edgewood, MD. He later sold the store in the early 80's after the death of his store manager, Herb Groff.
